Mine is $100 per month from AdSense, I reached 1000 unique visits per day for first time in August (held it for nine days in a row before losing it though).

My long time goals are to reach $1,000 per month from blogging.

        Justin,

For 30,000 unique visits a month, you should be able to make more than $100/month from the blog.

It would be a lot easier to sell $100 worth of targeted ads than count on AdSense, but if that is what you want to do you need to target keyword phrases that have higher ppc costs.

I know how to get our blogs to 1000 visitors a day and under 15,000 on Alexa. I have the plan already drawn up – just haven’t had time to finish the post and share it.

Justin – can we connect on Skype or chat? I feel you should be a key collaborator in that plan.

My goal is to hit 1000 unique visitors a day before the end of the year. I’m currently around 300. I’ve popped up to the 1000 then lost it when the site transferred servers, froze for two weeks and all my Google stuff disappeared.

My initial statement is that page rank is an invalid way of viewing how well your blog is working. If I had to choose between Alexa and PR, I’d choose Alexa. My second statement is, if you can see your Alexa rank, it’s skewed because you’re on Blogger, and thus it’s invalid. I’d move to the self hosted blog, link back to the old blog and from the old blog link to your new one. And then you’ll get all the benefits from it instead of sharing whatever you have with Blogger.

Though I have to disagree with Mitch, no offence Mitch, I think alexa is pretty useless, why? Because it’s skewed, google PR does have more weight… always will, go ask any non blogging friend, say, my alexa rank is 10,000 whatever, and then, my google PR is 4… I’ll bet they say, ”who the F is alexa?” ;) It’s perception more than anything…

From what I was told. different advertisers choose which ones they use to mark your site’s value. Alexa is popular with a lot of them because it’s owned by Amazon.

For me, I go where the money is. That’s who will pay the bills.

You’re allowed to disagree, Rob, because I’m going to disagree back. Even Matt Cutts has said that PR has nothing to do with value, and it’s weight is skewed as well. Google can delist anyone at any time, and people can pay to have their websites rise higher in the rankings, which you can’t do to Alexa.

As to the second part about Alexa’s rankings being skewed, no one has said that for the last 2 years, and I know that because I researched it and wrote on it. True, in the past their algorithms were skewed towards people who were using the Alexa toolbar, but Alexa changed everything early in 2008 because they heard the same thing and wanted to make sure things were more fair.

I haven’t care for PR in years, and if you look at my IJS blog, it has no PR. It did until Google decided to take it away one day in September 2009, and I haven’t looked backwards. People tend to do a lot of stupid stuff to get PR, including sculpting for it, and Cutts said none of that works. It’s meaningless; I have seen sights with no Alexa ranking whatsoever with a PR of 6, and that pretty much means they’re getting no visitors but have linked internally really well. W3C has even stated that pages can rank well by linking internally only, and they’re proof of it.

I’ll go with Alexa any day.

That’s ok, don’t need your permission to disagree, same as you don’t with me :) I NEVER said PR did have anything to do with value, I DID say in the general peoples perception it has far more weight than an alexa ranking, when most people don’t even KNOW what elexa is…

They may have changed everything, but they started on skewed results and they stuck to that for years, that’s impacted on it all. They wanted to be fair? Really? If so, they would never have given favour to those with the toolbar in the first pace … they changed it because it had no weight in perception, like mine for ex. That’s damage limitation. ;)

I have never sculpted for PR same as never doing it for alexa, just blog and be done with it is my view… ;)

True, I’m all about just blogging as well. But I’ve read a lot of blogs where people have tried to teach others how to do it. The thing that surprised me was finding out that Google will still list links even if you add the ”nofollow” attribute; if that’s the case then what’s the point, right?

I don’t think Alexa actually started out trying to skew results on purpose. I think it was just easier for them to track and compare sites that used the toolbar than everyone else. But they did change, and whether people have heard of it or not, they’re at least a player in the game that needs to be recognized.

I’m not sure whether you’re asking if I’m serious that Google’s doing it or my question about it? See, that’s the imprecise nature of communicating on the internet; I’m not sure about intent or what the disbelief is.

I wouldn’t say PR doesn’t matter, you really think 2 sites compared with say same Alexa 25k and one is a PR6 the other a PR2, same number of links…etc. Which one you think will rank higher in SERP for organic search for targeted keywords?

I have Alexa, a decent Alexa and yet I know bloggers with far less pageviews/worse Alexa than me and make far more income per month from their blog due to high pagerank. Again, I am only speaking from experience in the 1000 – 30k visit per month range, I don’t have experience with higher traffic so can’t compare or speak to mega sites.

PR means nothing; content and keywords will rank you higher for keywords. For my main business keywords, I come up #1 against websites with PR of 6 or 7. The reason is because my content on that particular topic is better, not because my PR is better.

I don’t believe PR has anything to do with income at all; marketing does. There are tons of one-page websites that have made a lot of money and never gotten any PR because of marketing.

Mitch, i am asking if you are serious because every link has to be follow… for the SE to index things it goes by links, the folow, nofollow thing doesn’t stop the SE, to do that you would have to noindex the page url / link I guess…

Of course I’m serious; I wasn’t the only one at the time who thought that. After all, if you have a javascript link Google doesn’t follow it, so my impression, and that of a lot of other people, was that ”nofollow” was the way to do the same thing with a HTML link.

Rob Sellen is correct hear and I speak from experience, a blog with 100 visits a day and a PR6 will make far more income than a blog with 1000 visits a day and a PR2, this is just fact. Even though traffic should matter more than PageRank, Advertisers prefer pagerank and this is because the PageRank links to their site and improves their SERP, Alexa does not improve an advertisers SERP by advertising and getting the link. Though for product reviews I would think Alexa should matter more as a greater number of readers would read your review.

Mitch Mitchell · 8 hours, 25 minutes ago

Justin, I’d dispute that. I use John Chow as an example. He had no page rank for 3 years, yet was bringing in more than $30,000 a month on his blog. It’s just not true in general. What is true, though, is some advertisers will look for blogs with high PR to advertise on, and in that case those blogs have the chance to make more money.

What Alexa will tell you is if you have people actually coming to your blog or website. PR only tells people how well you’ve linked, whether internally or externally. I’ll take visitors over sculpting every day.

          • Avatar Image
Justin Germino · 8 hours, 18 minutes ago

I agree if your Alexa is in the top 5k of sites, but unless you can have truly mega amounts of traffic as in over 100,000 unique visits per month, you are not likely to see near those earnings without affiliate sales income.

Alexa matters if you are in the elite mark, but I speak for bloggers who fall in the ”beginner to intermediate” traffic range where your alexa ranks between 50k and 1 million. In this case PageRank matters more.

            • Avatar Image
Mitch Mitchell · 8 hours, 7 minutes ago

Well, I’m not sure PR ever matters, but that’s a personal thing. My blog does okay with no PR, but truthfully the few sales I make from that site are the same as when I had PR. However, I think looking at Alexa is a nice indication as to whether you have any presence on the internet or not. I’ve seen websites with a PR of 3 and no Alexa rank, which means no one’s even bothering with them, PR or not.

not strictly true.. my blog gets traffic but not enough according to alexa… and yet, you also assume that PR or alexa is linked to income, NEITHER will make ANY difference… what matters is what you do, not them…

I would seriously consider keeping that blog where it is and just launching a new blog on your own domain and own hosting account. That blog of yours would be good for pushing juice to your new site for very specific links that you want to rank for. Use your Blogger blog to write your own guest posts on that link to your new blog. You shouldn’t do it with every post. You should save it for carefully chose keywords targeted specifically for your Adsense.

      Just my two cents.

Good two cents, the only problem is, if you start a new blog, you DO lose everything you worked for, and doing what you suggest kathy, while it makes some sense, google would KNOW you are doing it and why, so I don’t think it would be worth it… best to just move the blog, then improve it lots. :)

I would ask John Sullivan if he had any old wordpress sites export to that or a new domain that you buy and be done with Google’s ass
      Page rank comes back :)
Why link back to a shit blog ?
I have a potpolitics.blogspot.com I used to do that posts some links etc but after a few months saw that blogspot to me is totally worthless :)

Go for it, won’t lose PR..plus the old blogspot blog stays in blogger dashboard.. both of mine are still there, they revert back to the blogspot address… though the blogs are not really there as such. ;) Anyway, need any help or whatever, ask anything, you know where I am :)

No problem, there are a couple of links back from it and rightly so, this place is worthy of the links. :)

Yeah, see what you started? lol What this all proves, of course, is that there’s no one consensus reply to your question because we all see it differently and from different points of view. But overall, you can’t hurt yourself if you either move your entire blog or you just start a new one and link back.
